Annie Strikes Gold

Congratulations to Annie Mabo who is one of the leading TAVE students at DC. She recently acquired a QCE by completing her courses in 2010.

Annie is an excellent touch football player and coach. She has completed a certificate III in Health and Nursing that are worth maximum points each along with a number of other completions that include:

BSB20101 - Cert II Business - 1 Credit
BSB20107 - Cert II Business - 4 Credits (currently finishing off)
Cert III Children's Services - 8 credits
Cert III Health Services Assistance - 8 credits
English Communication - 4 credits
Prevocational Maths - 4 credits
Religion and Ethics - 4 credits

We wish Annie all the best for her future and is a great example of what happens when you put your best foot forward and complete courses in the TAVE year.

Student star of the term is Judith Carney

The student star of the term is Judith Carney who is the first year 12 student to complete all of her work. This comes on the back of being a good mother to Reeko, while setting an outstanding example about how to acquire and education with competing interests. Judith’s greatest asset is her deep reflective thinking and an analytical mind that is complimented by her strong will and determination. It is interesting to note that everyone loves Reeko, and from what I observe, he exudes a great deal of his mother’s delightful and insightful nature. Perhaps this is the start of a new dynasty where children like Reeko follow in their parents footsteps by acquiring an education and a successful career as a result. Judith is seen here wearing the new senior school shirt for 2010.

Everyone in the school loves Reeko and everyone loves what Judith has achieved.

Health Services Assistance

Both groups of students are working hard to finish assessments for the end of the year. We have been working as a group on a wiki about Culture and Health, and last Friday, the students presented this to the group. It is great to see how confident and well spoken the students are.

We have been doing practicals at TAFE for the last few weeks and on Friday,
were tested on bedmaking (with and without clients), and moving patients with a sling out of bed and into a shower chair. More able patients use an assisted walker. We also learnt how to give a client a “bed-bath”. Here is Stella practicing on “George”, our patient.

Children Services

This week students in Year 12 and TAVE finished their theory unit on “Working Effectively With Families” in the one day! Well done Kernisha, Tiaella and Natalie! It was the Year 11 students' turn to perform observations on students in Ms. Sian's class. They wrote good observations for their first time and will complete the unit next week. Kernisha has been our star student, attending practical days and progressing very well through her theory. Well done Kernisha! Unfortunately, Aileen was absent.

Clothing Production News 27/08/10

Since the beginning of this term April has shown a high level of motivation in Clothing Production. She has worked industriously and tirelessly. Her target was to produce her own graduation gown. She did everything possible to finish her gown in time. This includes staying behind after school, paying attention to detail, and of course, following all the teacher’s instructions. Today she is obviously proud of her production. She shows off to her friends about her talent in this course. She cannot wait until she wears it on the formal night. Lane Ingui has also produced a magnificent purple gown but you will have to wait and see both girls on the night!

To be or not to be

Miss Emma & Mr Richard our two resident thespians arranged for the senior school to go to the Tanks Art Centre to see the Shakespearian play Measure to Measure on Thursday. While a group of students remained behind to complete assessment tasks the majority of senior school went to the play. Most of the students understood the play and knew what was happening despite ‘old fashioned language’ and were witness to indigenous actors in major roles along with DC staff.

It was interesting to note students like Chris Lei who had never been to a Shakespearian play, laughing, enjoying and understanding a unique cultural aspect that furthers their personal growth and development. At the end of the play a woman from the audience gave a heartfelt thank you to the students just for being there and the Director said it was the best audience they had encountered to date which was due to the level of interaction and response. Warren, the indigenous actor who played Angelo kept scaring Judith Carney and she almost leapt out of her seat on several occasions. The question on the day wasn’t to be or not to be - it simply was.

The Brothers

The Akiba brothers are known for their sporting prowess and success. Mark recently ran and drew the 100 metre race at the All Blacks Carnival in Mann Street Cairns. He won $50. Mark's hero is Usain Bolt and on this day Mark did exactly that.


The boys recently were fitted for their outfits for the graduation and looked very smart indeed. Have a great formal and happy end to Year 12.

IT students have been given a crash course in creating audio podcasts using Garage Band and creating video Podcasts (VodCasts) using i-movie. Students have been recording audio and video around the school to create their project ‘Today at Djarragun’.

Star’s of the week are Jaharla and Fredson who have finished creating their songs. The students work will be uploaded to the Djarragun website and stored forever!
