Health Services Assistance

Last Friday, the AIN girls completed their practical assessment for this semester. It involved them reading a scenario, then acting it out as if they were in a hospital ward. Carmille and Stella worked as a team and showed confidence and skill in handling a difficult, complaining patient!

Working co-operatively, they moved the patient safely to the bathroom for a shower then returned her to the bed for a meal, all the time communicating in a friendly, positive manner. Together with their written assessment of 50 questions, and an oral test last week, this puts them at 85% finished for their Certificate lll. A terrific effort! We are attending a 2 -day First Aid course on Dec 1st and 2nd to complete another competency.

Health Services Assistance

Both groups of students are working hard to finish assessments for the end of the year. We have been working as a group on a wiki about Culture and Health, and last Friday, the students presented this to the group. It is great to see how confident and well spoken the students are.

We have been doing practicals at TAFE for the last few weeks and on Friday,
were tested on bedmaking (with and without clients), and moving patients with a sling out of bed and into a shower chair. More able patients use an assisted walker. We also learnt how to give a client a “bed-bath”. Here is Stella practicing on “George”, our patient.

AIN - Childcare - PASS News

This semester has seen 5 new students commence the Health Services Assistance course through TAFE. They join 45 other students in a comprehensive course for 5 months to complete the competencies necessary for AIN (Assistant in Nursing). They attend TAFE every Friday for lectures / tutorial and complete the assessments at school on their VET day. A busy time.

We have started with Infection Control procedures, growing bugs on agar jelly and learning how to put on and use personal protective equipment, (PPE). We feel like real nurses!

UPDATE: the ‘graduates’ from Semester 1:
Annie Mabo is now training as a paramedic,
Liz Gebadi is doing work experience with Apunipima (& hoping for work), and
Shakira Thaiday is applying for jobs.

Children’s Services: Year 12 students have been working solidly through their units, but some need to up the anti on their practical experience in order to finish by the end of the year. So far, all are prepared to do some prac over the holidays which is great! The students have been enjoying various activities such as making Gloop and doing collage. Kernisha (TAVE student) went to her day care centre and told them about the Gloop and her group leader asked her to organise a “Gloop” activity for the centre. The children loved it and the group leader was very impressed with Kernisha!

Congratulations to Esther Asai (last year TAVE student) who has completed her Cert III Children Services certificate with me by mail and phone! She is currently working at Masig Ipkazil Childcare Centre as an assistant childcare worker.

Health Services News

Stella Dau is one of the newly enrolled Health Services Assistance students. She is in Grade 12 and is keen to finish this course to contribute points towards her QCE. Stella is a committed student, attending school every day, working hard in class and completing her assignments for TAFE. She is a courteous student, smart in her uniform, polite to staff and her peers, with always a friendly smile. Great to have you in Nursing, Stella!

A story from Ms Rosemary

I had an interesting day with my Health students this term at TAFE.

We had gathered for some practical tests (role playing) and the students were quite nervous. The lecturer gave each student a scenario and we read it together. She then sent all but one student out of the class, keeping one back for the test. I was the patient and lay in the bed, ready to complain and co-operate. I received such a surprise (and so did the lecturer) when each student boldly took on the story, speaking the words, adding the tone, calming the patient down, doing the actions and controlling the whole situation. They did such a terrific job! I was so proud of them.

The Health students all passed with flying colours and it reassured me of the talent, fun and courage of our students.

Cert III n Health Services Assistance

A super big congratulations to all the students who passed their Cert III in Health Services Assistance. They have completed 16 competencies over the past 16 months. Very well done!

Star students get 8 points towards QCE

Two students have recently completed all 15 competencies for their Certificate lll in Health Services Assistance.
John Gabey (Year 12) and Elizabeth Gebadi (TAVE) have recently completed all the requirements for this course.
They have been studying for 18 months, never giving up, despite the change in TAFE lecturers four times and a weekly lesson at TAFE campus. This gives John and Elizabeth 8 points towards their QCE and a great start out in the workforce. Ms Rosemary commends the effort and commitment the students have shown and congratulate them on a fantastic result - the school is very proud of you!

John: It was worth all the hard work and stress - I am proud of myself and it is one step closer to my goal of becoming a doctor.

Elizabeth: After all the hard work and time at TAFE it is great , 'cause now I get to work at something I really enjoy.'

Well done to Ms Rosemary on guiding her students through the maze and to be able the doors of education and opportunity.

VET - Health Services Assistance

On May 18th, John Gabey, Elizabeth Gebadi and Annie Mabo completed two more of their competencies towards their Certificate lll in Health Services Assistance.

After weeks of preparation, the students completed three tasks:
• creating a wiki as a team and presenting a 2 minute speech on an aspect of indigenous health. You can see this at:

• Practical work involving making beds, caring for clients, moving clients and infection control procedures. (see photos)

• An oral test where students answered questions about their actions and gave reasons for procedures.

They performed exceptionally well and completed each task with confidence and a sound knowledge of the material taught. Our lecturer was impressed! The students are completing their last few written assessments towards their course and will finish by the end of term.
